People from the Dominican Republic shared their annual celebration of Our Lady of High Grace with the parish community of La Sagrada Familia. Sr. Pat was invited to share her reflections of the feast. Sr. Pat has ministered 6 years in the Dominican Republic coordinating and teaching in a lay ministry program for various dioceses throughout the country. She explained that in the Dominican Republic, every January 21 there is a great celebration in honor of the Virgin Mary, Our Lady of High Grace, the patroness of the Dominican Republic.
The geographical center of this celebration is the Basilica named in her honor in the eastern part of the country. Many thousands come to the city of Higüey from all over the country and from outside in order to strengthen their devotion, to fulfill a promise, to show gratitude to the Virgin Mary for a favor received or simply participate in a pilgrimage that seems to be a natural part of Dominican life. Sr. Pat told the legend of how a picture of Our Lady of High Grace appeared in an orange tree despite the attempts of a little girl to keep the picture on her bedroom wall. The lesson being that Mary is for all people. She cannot be contained in one place and to one person. At the end of Mass, oranges were passed out to the people recalling the legend. Afterwards, everyone was invited to eat typical Dominican food and coffee in the hall. It was a wonderful celebration! "Mother of God, Virgin of High Grace, show to us the path of our Savior to all your children in this continent so that the faith which was received, may become fertile through works of justice, peace and love." Pope John Paul II

December 14, 2002 Advent Reflection with the Peruvian Community prepared by Sr. Pat Harvat and Rosie Andujar.
A group of 30 listened to the history of advent and meaning of the O Antiphons. They briefly reflected on the human and divine Jesus and then participated in a guided meditation. Afterward there was a sharing of hot chocolate and typical Peruvian bread. The Peruvian community brought gifts for the poor and filled a table with them which the Office of Hispanic Ministry will distribute. Three homeless persons came into the session and took part in the fellowship of eating, truly a visit of our God among us. With grateful hearts the people joined in celebrating the 7:00 p.m. Mass in the parish.
